Joey’s antipodean adventures are chronicled in a series of short stories which as the author says, are ideal for reading aloud or can be read by older children in the 8 - 10 years range.

Told in a simplistic style they make good use of dialogue and manage to slip in some interesting facts about Australia life which gave a delightful sense of place and time.

I particularly liked the way all the children in Joey’s New Job were living up to their parents expectations! This was used to very good effect to introduce Joey to the idea of a new brother or sister arriving on the scene.

There are some nice touches of humour too! The Digerydon’t was a good piece of “tall storytelling,” which saw Joey hitching a ride in a kangaroo’s pouch and bringing back a digerydon’t. There was a nice twist at the end of this which made me laugh! I won’t spoil it by revealing here!

The stories are illustrated by photographs which are interesting, but I thought were a bit too adult for this type of book. It would really benefit from some quality illustrations.

Joey in the Outback edition by Richard F Challis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

It was vivid since the first chapter. The dialogues are suitable for children. It’s an excellent story for bed time, or for weekends to take a rest in the ship of the letters.
This book is funny, very enjoyable to read. A fantasy book very appropriate for the kids. There are even some links you can watch youtube films. I loved to hear the sound of a bird singing (actually laughing). And there is even a story with dinosaurus! Which kid doesn't like to hear these types of stories? An awesome fantasy book for the fantasy mind of young children. Further I won't tell you anything else, you have to read this book for your kids!
